Academy FM in Thanet and Folkestone
Academy FM community radio stations were awarded five year licences by OFCOM to operate on FM frequencies in Thanet from 2010 and in Folkestone from 2011. The radio stations are registered charities and are based at the Marlowe Academy and the Folkestone Academy respectively. Originally conceived as educational resources to compliment the mainstream curriculum at the Academies, they operate round the clock, 365 days a year, and provide a valuable service of news and features, as well as a broadcasting a wide range of music and specialist programmes, some presented by students at the Academies and others by volunteers, designed to appeal to all age groups. The two Academy FM radio stations also visit local events and stage outside broadcasts, including at Folkestone Air Show and Harbour Festival.
Under OFCOM regulations, neither of the two stations is able to broadcast “on air” commercials or sponsorship, so both are reliant on charitable donations and grants. The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust provided considerable financial assistance for start up costs to purchase equipment for the two stations, and has continued to make regular grants to enable them to operate.
