Turner Contemporary is Margate’s new gallery, opened in April 2011, dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of visual arts in the town where artist JMW Turner was a regular visitor. He was attracted to this part of Kent by the unique qualities of light, and is said to have remarked to John Ruskin that “the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe”. This landmark gallery, situated adjacent to Margate’s harbour arm, represents the largest indoor exhibition space in the south east, outside London, and has been sees as a major catalyst for regeneration in east Kent.

The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust has made significant donations both to the capital build cost of the gallery and to its endowment fund, which helps towards development and running expenses.
