“Spitfire” Wing Nears Completion

Published on February 12th, 2015

Work is almost complete on the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust’s iconic new visitor centre at the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne. Built in the shape of a Spitfire Wing, the dramatic new building will be home to The Scramble Experience, a hands-on, audio-visual extravaganza that will tell the story of the Battle of Britain, and The Geoffrey Page Centre, a learning and teaching space.

The new building, which has taken just 18 months to build and fit out at a cost of £3.5m, is due to open this spring. It will also include a shop area and a first floor café and balcony with unbeatable views over the Channel towards France, from where the Luftwaffe would have appeared day after day in the summer and early autumn of 1940.

The project has been funded by donations from private foundations and individuals, including the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust. Local architects and surveyors Godden Allen Lawn designed The Wing, which is being built by Kent-based Epps Construction.
