A new not for profit sports charity – the Shepway Sports Trust – was launched officially at Three Hills Sports Park in Folkestone on Sunday 22 June, with invited guests called on to take part in a Guinness World Record attempt at chair dancing!

The launch event offered a range of taster sessions organised by local sports clubs and demonstrations by local sports personalities, many of whom have agreed to become Ambassadors for the Shepway Sports Trust initiative. Josh Kennedy and Barry Pluck took part in a boxing demonstration, and Kent cricketer Geraint Jones, a member of the 2005 Ashes-winning England team, was on hand to help promote CATCH Cricket. Other Ambassadors contributing to the day included UCI Bike triallist James Sheridan, rated as number two in Europe, and tennis player Michael Owen and downhill slalom skier Frazer Southall, Shepway students who both perform at national level.

A focal point of the day was the world record chair dancing attempt, which ended in triumph for the Shepway Sports Trust and choreographers Tiempo Dance and Fitness. A five minute session by 273 participants, including Folkestone Town Mayoress Diane North and Shepway District Councillors Susan Carey and Jenny Hollingsbee, beat the previous record, set in 2011 by 271 participants at Riverside, Missouri, USA. Folkestone Town Mayor Cllr Alan North and Leader of Shepway District Council Cllr David Monk were called in to act as independent witnesses to the attempt.

Shepway Sports Trust Director Laurence Hickmott said: “This was a fantastic day for sport in the area, with between 350 and 400 people taking part. The atmosphere at Three Hills was tremendous, and we were delighted at the success of our Guinness World record attempt. We were also really pleased to see so many sports represented: our aim is to create a climate where sport can be accessible to the widest possible range of people, encouraging healthier lifestyles and promoting greater sporting achievement. We feel that we have made a great start in our mission to establish Shepway as a centre of real sporting excellence.”

Organisations who took part in the launch event included Folkestone Basketball Club, England Handball, CATCH Cricket, Folkestone Cricket Club, Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club, Folkestone Rugby Club, Folkestone Amateur Boxing Club, Charlton Athletic Community Trust, Folkestone Invicta Disability Football Club, Hythe Lawn Tennis Club, Folkestone Running Club, Canton Martial Arts and Disc Golf.
